FAQ

Thermal, Blockout and Roller Blinds

Where do I use Roller blinds?

Blockout roller blinds are best suited to bedrooms, offices, and other areas where privacy is required.

Whats the difference between blockout roller blinds and sunscreen roller blinds?

The sunscreen rollers are a translucent fabric designed to block the harmful UV rays from the sun but providing soft filtered daylight. These are typically used in living areas where privacy is not crucial and a view to the vista outside is required. These blinds will reduce the heat and UV glare that can make rooms uncomfortable.

Will blockout roller blinds keep heat in over winter?

Roller blinds will help insulate your rooms and provide more warmth on those cold winter nights. They will help you save money on your power bills also and give you some privacy however if you want full thermal protection then our thermal roller blinds are the one to use as they have a thermal backing on the fabric which provides extra insulation. Either way, you’ll pay less on your power bills.

What are the best blinds for stopping my neighbours from looking into my home?

If your neighbours live close by then having blinds that stop them seeing in is critical for ultimate privacy. Using blockout roller blinds you have two choices. One is thermal blinds and one is standard blockout blinds. Both have thermal qualities but one has more than the other. Both will give you privacy though.

Do thermal blinds stop fading from UV rays on my carpet and furniture or should I use curtains?

As well as privacy your beautiful custom made blockout blinds will protect carpet and furniture from fading, especially in sunny rooms that are north facing. We don’t recommend curtains as they need to be dry cleaned and are big dust attractors. Thermal blinds and blockout blinds are easily cleaned and come with our amazing 10 year warranty*. They are designed for harsh UV rays from New Zealand’s powerful sun

Our custom made blinds have a silky smooth, German designed chain control mechanism with a choice to motorise if required.

You will also notice our extensive range of designer fabrics, all of which have a 10 year warranty* which gives you peace of mind that your home will be protected and the blinds will last.

Where are the best places to use thermal blockout blinds?

Thermal blockout blinds are designed to keep harmful UV rays out of a room plus help with the temperature control of the space. Because of this most of our applications are as follows:
1. Large residential apartments blocks where apartments are north facing and have issues with the afternoon sun

2. Office buildings that have alot of glass (which is the modern way) and therefore have high exposure to the sun on the north facing sides of the complex.

3. New homes (and existing homes) that have an area requiring full privacy and the need to keep heat out and keep heat in over winter.

A dual combination of a sunscreen blind and a thermal block out blind on the same window.

Can I see through thermal blockout blinds?

No the blinds are not see through as they have a white backing on them and are thicker than standard roller blinds

Do Thermal blinds keep the warmth in over winter?

Yes they do, the polymer backing provides additional heat retention over the winter months.

Aluminium Venetian Blinds

1. What is the best way to clean aluminium venetian blinds?

This depends on what is on the aluminium blinds. In some cases the dirt is just dust which can be removed with a microfibre cloth or a low powered hand held portable vacuum cleaner. In other cases the dirt on the blinds contains oils from cooking and dust which is more difficult to remove then just simple living room dust. With oils and grease from cooking you will require a gentle all purpose kitchen cleaning spray which will cut through the grease on the venetian blinds if used in conjunction with warm water.

Step One: Tilt the blinds up and apply a light spray of the cleaning solution. (Do not use aggressive caustic styled cleaners)
Step Two: Using hot water squeeze excess water from your microfibre cloth and gently rub the blinds to remove the grease and the cleaning compound. Aluminium venetian blinds use a powder coating painting system which is very robust but it pays to take care and attention if you remove the blind and place on a flat surface. Make sure the surface is smooth and not abrasive.
Step Three: Tilt the blind and repeat the process until all surface grease, cooking oils and dust is removed

Step Four: Using a another clean damp microfibre cloth give the blinds another wipe over using the tilt process to remove the cleaning detergents and any surplus. Repeat this on the other side by tilting the blind

Step Five: Leave the blinds to dry naturally and enjoy your beautiful clean aluminium blinds!

Vertical Blinds

Q: What is the best way to clean vertical blinds?

A:One of the considerations in cleaning vertical blinds is the positioning on these blinds in the home. Typically vertical blinds are used in areas such as living rooms, lounges, sitting rooms and in offices. This is the ideal location as it avoids the issue of the blinds attracting grease and oils from cooking which makes the cleaning process harder.Vertical blinds come with fabric protection ingredients for preventing mould and mildew and for resisting the strong UV rays we have in New Zealand. These protectants are embedded into the blind fabric when manufactured.

What this means is if you remove the vertical blinds fabric and wash them in a laundry tub with soap and water you will in fact remove the anti-mould and mildew retardant. Also depending on the fabrics used and the quality of the fabrics (Ours have a 10 year warranty*) the fabric could shrink or go out of shape so we we do not recommend washing the blinds in this manner.Instead use a woollen extension on a medium powered vacuum cleaner and give the vertical blinds a light vacuum every 6 weeks or so. This way you will have clean dust free vertical blinds and a clean living environment in your home.

Q: How do I get rid of black mould on my blinds
A: The fabric comes with a mould retardant so you should not get mould build up but in the unlikely event of having mould then use “exit mould” as all our fabrics are colour fast which means they won’t change colour.

Wooden Blinds

Where did Wooden Venetian Blinds originate from?

It is claimed that the first commercial wooden blind was created in 1767 in Pennsylvania by an English man who saw the opportunity to block the strong afternoon sun over the summertime.
Having visited Italy previously he was exposed to the wooden shutter system and thought he could improve the design for the locals by providing the following features and benefits.

1. His “Wooden Venetian Sun Shades” were able to be hoisted up so they were out of the way giving the user full access to the view out the window without anything obstructing it. (alot of people are thanking him now for that foresight)

2. The design he used was alot lighter than his Italian counterparts and this was more suited for the lighter wooden houses being built at the time. Italy had very deep window sills which were made out of bricks and mortar and were able to support the heavy solid wooden blinds that were constructed from strong timbers such as Chestnut and Beechwood. The new wooden blinds were lighter and much easier to use and hang.

3. The wooden venetian screens were more effective than the Roman styled blinds of that time, which used very loose weaved canvas that was susceptible to rotting and fading over time. The wooden blinds were built from robust basswood and were able to be coloured with vegetable dyes for the fashion conscious. These blinds were very popular as they were more robust and could stand the test of time. I am sure the folk of Pennsylvania would be very interested now to see the multiple colours available now in modern aluminium venetian blinds.

Fortunately in modern times we have blockout blinds that come with a ten year blind warranty*, so no worries about rot or fading here!

What is the difference between a front roll or back roll?

A front roll on a roller blind is when the fabric falls over the top of the roll (you cannot see the roll of fabric).  A back roll is when the fabric rolls to the back of the roll, this means you can see the roll at the top.
